Green Initiative & Sustainability
Wood is both a renewable and carbon-neutral resource, meaning it has a positive impact on our environment due to its ability to naturally offset CO2. We choose to manufacture wood products not only because they’re naturally beautiful, but because it’s good for the earth. However, our commitment to sustainability goes beyond production.
Here’s what we’re doing to protect the earth.
Our Environmental Initiatives
We use Wolman AG for our preservative-treatment process, which is nonmetallic and environmentally friendly. We also pulverize our biproducts into hog fuel, so they’re broken down into a more usable form. Recently, we invested in a baghouse filter to filter out potentially harmful particles from the atmosphere to promote healthier air quality. In the year 2022, we donated the most significant amount of funds yet to climate change research and education. Additionally, in June of 2023, we partnered with Evertreen, and planted 1,000 trees across North America.
Commitment to Our Community
We have invested in the necessary filters and equipment to make sure our local community is breathing clean air, free from any sawdust or wood particles.
Charitable Giving
Sustainability is one of our core pillars when it comes to charitable giving. Each year, we contribute to the The Staley Family Endowed Excellence Scholarship, which is awarded each Spring to a first-generation, undergraduate student within the School of the Environment at Washington State University. Additionally, Belco supports other organizations looking to positively impact the environment.
At Belco Forest Products, we believe in the natural beauty of real wood trim, but not just because of the aesthetic.
Sustainability is one of our core pillars when it comes to our charitable giving, and an important component of our community resources. Natural wood is a carbon-neutral and sustainable substrate. With intentional reforestation practices, the forest products industry is supporting a renewable resource that benefits our earth. We see the effects of climate change, and as a leader in the forest products industry, understand the importance of investing in scientific climate change research now so we can see the promise of a greener tomorrow.
Our Commitments
Our Partnership with BEF and Commitment to a Greener Future
At Belco Forest Products, sustainability is at the core of our values. We are delighted to share our recent collaboration with BEF, a non-profit organization dedicated to forging clean energy pathways in Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington. Collective Achievements: BEF and ClimeCo, have worked with partners like us to collectively achieved significant milestones:
- Supported over 10.8 million megawatt hours of renewable electricity generation through the purchase of RECs.
- Offset over 8.4 million metric tons of greenhouse gases through the purchase of carbon offsets.
- Restored over 45.3 billion gallons of water to critically depleted rivers, streams, and groundwater aquifers through BEF's Water Restoration Program.
Belco's Commitment to Carbon Neutrality
As a leader in the forest products industry, Belco Forest Products is taking bold steps towards a sustainable future. We've recently offset our carbon emissions by purchasing 664 carbon offsets, equivalent to 1,463,869 pounds of carbon dioxide (CO2E). This offset supports the BigCoast Forest Climate Initiative, a groundbreaking project on Mosaic Forest Management's private forest lands in Canada. Key Highlights:
- The BigCoast Forest Climate Initiative is the largest project of its kind in Canada.
- It aims to increase carbon storage and avoid 20 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions over its lifespan.
Our Pledge to Sustainability
Belco Forest Products is proud to play a role in these transformative initiatives. Our commitment to sustainability extends beyond our operations, and we invite you to join us on this journey towards a greener, more sustainable world. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to lead the way in sustainable practices. Thank you for being a part of our sustainability mission.
